About the Authors
Donald J. Johnson
Donald J. Johnson is a professor of International Education and Asian Studies at New York University, where he teaches courses on Hinduism, Indian History, World History, and Comparative Cultures. He is co-author of God and Gods in Hinduism, Emperor Ashoka of India: What Makes a Ruler Legitimate? and Mao and Gandhi: Two Paths to National Independence and Development, as well as numerous articles and teaching materials on Asia and world history. He has served as director of Asian Studies at New York University and conducted study programs in India and China. He serves as a consultant to the Asia Society.
Jean E. Johnson
Jean E. Johnson taught history for twenty years at Friends Seminary in New York City and teaches World History and Social Studies methods at New York University. She has also taught in Turkey and worked in India developing curriculum materials about South Asia for American students. She has served as director of TeachAsia, a staff development program sponsored by the Asia Society. She was Klingenstein Fellow at Columbia Teachers College and participated in the Woodrow Wilson TORCH program as a teacher-educator on world history. Co-authors of God and Gods of in Hinduism, Emperor Ashoka of India, and Mao and Gandhi, she and her husband Don are currently writing a world history textbook for secondary students.
